Packers Add Three Young Coaches

The Green Bay Packers are putting the finishing touches on their 2021 coaching staff. Over the course of the past couple of weeks, Justin Hood, Ryan Mahaffey, and Tim Zetts have been hired by the team. As is very often the case in the National Football League, all three have a prior working relationship with either head coach Matt LaFleur or one of his assistants.

Hood spent the past two seasons as the secondary coach and defensive passing game coordinator at Kent State. He previously worked with assistant offensive line coach Luke Butkus at Illinois, where he earned his master’s degree. His resume includes stops at Capital, Davidson, and West Carolina. The 34-year-old, who interned with the New York Giants in the summer of 2013, will be a defensive quality control coach in Green Bay.

Mahaffey spent the past two seasons as the offensive coordinator at Northern Iowa. The former NFL running back worked with LaFleur at Notre Dame in 2014. His resume includes a stop at Western Carolina. The 33-year-old will most likely be an offensive quality control coach in Green Bay, but his official job title has yet to be determined.

Zetts (pictured above) spent the past two seasons as the offensive coordinator at Austin Peay. He played with quarterbacks coach Luke Getsy at Akron and later worked with him at Mississippi State. Zetts also played at Saginaw Valley State, LaFleur’s alma mater. His resume includes stops at Cal (PA), Indiana (PA), Fordham, John Carroll, and Davidson, where he worked with Hood. The 34-year-old will be an offensive quality control coach in Green Bay.

The Packers had three entry-level openings on their staff after offensive quality control coach Kevin Koger, defensive quality control coach Christian Parker, and senior analyst/offensive assistant Butch Barry all left recently for better opportunities. Koger will coach tight ends with the Los Angeles Chargers, Parker will coach defensive backs with the Denver Broncos, and Barry will be an assistant O-line coach with the San Francisco 49ers.

LaFleur seems to really try to identify new coaches who can bring fresh ideas. Exciting to see!
