Pick A Side: Taylor Swift Or Queen?

It’s amazing how divided people are when it comes to Aaron Rodgers. I took a quick poll of 229 Packers fans a few weeks ago, and 122 wanted the back-to-back MVP to be traded while 107 wanted him to sign an extension. That’s a 53/47 split.

Let’s call the fans who want Rodgers traded for a handful of high draft picks the Exile group. That’s the title of a song by pop star Taylor Swift and Wisconsin’s own Bon Iver with a chorus that perfectly sums up their reasoning. Take a listen:

Despite Rodgers being named Most Valuable Player four times between 2011 and 2021, he hasn’t been able to get the Packers back to the Super Bowl. And while he’s certainly not the No. 1 reason for the nine failures in January, he’s played a role of varying degrees in all of them, especially the last two. So you certainly can’t blame 53% of pragmatic fans for doubting that Rodgers in his late 30s will be able to do something that Rodgers in his late 20s and early 30s couldn’t do.

Let’s call the fans who want Rodgers extended for another two or three seasons the We Are the Champions group. That’s the title of an iconic song by rock supergroup Queen with a chorus that perfectly sums up their reasoning. Take a listen:

Despite not getting to the Super Bowl since 2010, Green Bay has made the playoffs in nine of the past 11 seasons, and they’ve reached the NFC Championship Game four times. And if not for a botched onside kick, the Packers would’ve played for the Lombardi Trophy in 2014. So you certainly can’t blame 47% of passionate fans for wanting their favorite team to keep the Super Bowl window open for as long as possible – a window that would be slammed shut without Rodgers.

With the new league year scheduled to begin on Mar. 16, a decision on Rodgers’ future is expected any day now. Until then, here’s a song by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers with a chorus that both sets of fans can appreciate. Take a listen:
